Artist Profile

Artist Profile : Michael Montcombroux : Michael is primarily a landscape painter who resides just north of Winnipeg in Manitoba’s Interlake. From many years of living on the prairies and in the Canadian Arctic, he is strongly attracted to the minimalist visual elements of these two regions. Although trained in the European tradition, particularly that of English watercolor, Michael has been influenced by such painters as watercolorist Winslow Homer, American regionalist Thomas Hart Benton and California plein air artist Rex Brandt. His main media are watercolor and oil, but he is also interested various printmaking processes, namely woodengraving and Japanese wood block printing. Stylistically, Michael treads a varying path between realism based on direct sketches and photo documentation, and idealism based on imagination. Fundamental to his art practice is a recognition that all painting is underpinned by finely-honed drawing skills.
