Artist Profile

Biography Hubert Théroux grew up in the rural community of Cardinal, Manitoba where his love for the Canadian prairie was nurtured on the family farm. His interest in art began in childhood and by fourteen had settled on oils as his medium of choice. As a youth he painted the landscapes around his home, then progressed to include the farm activities which he recalled from his early childhood. More recently, he has been inspired by his children and has captured on canvas their innocent play. Towering grain elevators, golden wheat fields and immense prairie skies are also favorite subjects. Hubert has developed a style invoking, in the viewer, memories of their own experiences. He is skilled at capturing the light of the prairie landscape and transposing to the canvas the intense colors of summer and autumn, as well as the more subtle shadings of our western winters. During high school, Hubert completed a correspondence course from New York, and in 1975 a workshop, by renowned photographer, George Tan, gave him a new awareness of light, which greatly influenced his painting style. Hubert also attended workshops in France, furthering his insight into many other art mediums. In 1979 he became a full-time artist. He travelled western Canada doing shows with World of Art & Craft and Great Western Artists, and locally with the Red River Art & Craft Co-op. In 2005 his work with CancerCare Manitoba Foundation’s “Bears on Broadway” was a great opportunity to gather with the art community and produce work of a different genre and scale. As president of the Assiniboia Group of Artists Co-operative Inc., he assists in promoting local talent through the Manitoba Art Expo. Hubert has created four murals for the Boissevain & Morton Arts Council and one for Ducks Unlimited. He has been commissioned to produce artwork for the Canadian Wheat Board, Les Caisse Populaire du Manitoba, United Grain Growers, and New Flyer Industries. His work hangs proudly in many private collections throughout Canada, USA, Europe and Australia. Hubert’s images have been published as limited edition prints, book covers and calendars.
